Properties and trends of alkaline-earth metals
ALKALINE-EARTH METALS
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ALKALINE-EARTH METALS
For group 2 it is difficult to establish general trends and several irregularities are observed in some physical trends as illustrated in table 2. We can observe how variation of the density along the group of the elements is quite irregular. It descends slightly from beryllium to calcium and then increases at the bottom of the group. This irregular variation is due to the differences in the crystal structures of the elements. Additionally, melting and boiling points of these elements don’t show any regular trend. However, if we compare these data from those obtained for elements of group 1 we clearly observe how elements of group 2 are denser than the alkali metal in the same period and they have also higher melting and boiling points, as consequence of the stronger metallic bond for these elements.
