Tellurium and polonium
OBTAINING AND ISOLATION OF TELLURIUM AND POLONIUM
OCCURRENCE OF TELLURIUM AND POLONIUM
Tellurium is a comparatively rare element with an abundance in the earth’s crust that places the element in position 73 in the ranking of abundance of elements, contrasting with its greater cosmic abundance. The cause for the low concentration of tellurium on the Earth is a consequence of it being among the most depleted elements during Earth’s formation. Polonium on the other hand has no stable isotopes and only Polonium-210 occurs naturally as the second last element in the radium decay series. Polonium decays by alpha particle emission to lead with a half life of 138 days.
